Activities on Lanzarote - the must see places

Timanfaya National Park

Among must see activities for any Lanzarote visitor is Timanfaya a must. It is a unique place with its amazing, grandiose, multicoloured volcanic landscape. The parkland is entirely made up of volcanic soil of the Islote de Hilario volcano, is enclosed by the beautiful Fire Mountains, and offers amazing views over volcanic cones, unforgettable looks into craters and extraordinary scenary of lava and rock formations. The park is located in the southwestern part of the island and can be visited only through strictly controlled guided tours. Free roaming in the park is not allowed to protect the natural environment and the ecosystem of this unique volcanic landscape, as it’s the core area of UNESCO’s designation for Lanzarote as a Biosphere Reserve. If you’re hungry, try the El Diablo Restaurant, designed by Cesar Manrique, where delicious meat and fish are cooked on a grill using heat coming from inside the volcano. Also don’t forget to wear suitable shoes and clothing, as the weather can be a little cooler here.

Mirador del Río

Mirador del Río is the Island’s most famous and beautiful viewpoint, located approximately 500meters above the sea level on the Risco de Famara, looking towards the northern coastline of Lanzarote and the Graciosa Island from a privileged position. It was an old strategic maritime observation point used to monitor territorial waters, then in 1974 it was transformed into an architectural beauty by the iconic local artist Cesar Manrique. He designed Mirador del Rio, in a beautiful way that it’s almost invisible from the outside, he integrate it very well into the existing volcanic lava-rock formation there, and succedded to offer an extraordinary panoramic view to all the visitors.

The vineyards of La Geria

With their traditional methods of cultivation, the vineyards in the centre of the island are a protected area. Single vines are planted in pits 4-5m wide and 2-3m deep, with small stone walls around each pit. This agricultural technique is designed to harvest rainfall and overnight dew and to protect the plants from the winds. The vineyards are unique and beautiful, and thus are a part of the World Heritage Site. A visit to one of the many family owned bodegas in this area is a must do during your stay.

Other great places to visit

Famara Beach

Famara is a small fisherman/surfing/kiting town in the northwest part of Lanzarote Island. It has a laid back, not touristique atmosphere. It is known as “The place for surf and kite” in Lanzarote, as it has great waves and wind conditions for all different levels of surfers. This is why our school is located at Famara, which is also island’s longest sandy beach. 5km of great waves and wind, surfers of all levels enjoying them and the amazing view to the Risco de Famara mountains. La Caleta de Famara has some good easy going restaurants where you can have great fresh fish cooked in the best way, along with typical Canarian food at El Risco or Restaurante Sol. There are a few other bars & terraces to enjoy the great views, a few small supermarkets, several surf shops, bike rental and life music concerts every Friday and Sunday at SunSet Bar and LocalClub.

La Santa

La Santa is another small fisherman/surfing town on the northwestern coast of Lanzarote, 15 minutes away by car from Famara. It is very similar to Famara and the most significant difference between both towns would be that in Famara you are right by the 6 km beach where we hold our lessons and in La Santa, you are next to some of the best reef surfing spots of Europe but the beach is a lot smaller. La Santa has a few cute typical Canarian, Chinese, Italian restaurants, a couple of small supermarkets, several bars, a cybercafé, surf shops, surf repair shops, bike rental shop and if you want to party, there is a Disco at La Santa Sport Hotel throwing big parties most nights.

La Graciosa Island

This tiny island off the north tip of Lanzarote has no roads, just fabulous beaches and a handful of great waterside fish restaurants. It’s also good for cycling and hiking if you are feeling energetic. Take the ferry from Orzola. Check the schedule at www.lineasromero.com.
